Coface Arena opened – A new landmark for Mainz
»Steep, angular, great!« These are the attributes of special guest Oliver Kahn for the new Mainz 05 arena. The goalkeeping titan and 30.000 fans and supporters of the Mainz team experienced the opening ceremonies of their new home. The opening had been preceded by a carnival-like procession from the old stadium “Am Bruchweg” to the new jewel box at the gates of the town in Bretzenheim – where the opening was celebrated with a friendly of the national soccer league team versus an all-city selection and a huge party.
The Coface Arena built by HBM according to the design of the architectural firm agn can host exactly 34.034 spectators. The traditional stadiums in England – the home country of soccer – served as an example: A stadium with four stands rising in a very steep angle rather than a circle structure. In this way the specific atmosphere of the “Bruchweg” should be transported into the new arena. With a capacity of seating room for 14.000 spectators respectively standing room for 20.000 spectators the arena is one of the German stadiums with a relatively high share of standing room – the west stand offers standing room for approximately 12.000 fans – the largest standing terrace in Germany with its 80 rows forms the »rote Mainzer Wand« and ensures a unique atmosphere. Less than two years after the contract was signed HBM has managed to complete the impressive stadium with its mighty, red archways. A new and attractive address for the Mainz 05 team, which is for sure immediately recognized in each television broadcast.
